The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) along with many other professional organizations is hosting our 5th annual Girls Engineer It! Day on Sept 17, 2016. Our mission and focus at this event is to expose 300 Middle & High school students and 75+ adults/educators to different types of Engineering and let them make an educated decision if it is a path they would consider as a profession. We sell out every year and we hope this year will have the same outstanding enrollment!
We start off with an Expo where the students get to perform small hands-on STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities provided by local companies, surrounding universities, and professional organizations. Then we break them into MS and HS groups. Each group performs 3 different Engineering hands-on creations/activities (1 hour for each) created and taught by local Technologist's. They typically get to take their creations home!
While the students are learning we have a separate event for the adults. We educated them on everything they might need to keep the students interested in STEM, college prep, financial aid, and even community opportunities for internships. They also will learn their own STEM activity that they are allowed to take home to teach the students what they learned.
We think it's a great opportunity, and we provide it at a very low cost of $6 a student. The event is limited to 200 students (100 middle and 100 high school). It is promoted as a female event, but males are allowed and attend every year.
